Maritime Memories Voyage operated by Voyages of Discovery and protected under ATOL No.3897
Voyage 10 - Murmansk,
Departing Harwich 19 July 2009

Voyage 10 - MurmanskA VOYAGE IN THE WAKE OF THE NOTORIOUS WORLD WAR II CONVOYS TO RUSSIA

Fortunately we will be able to relax and enjoy the comforts of the 20,000 gross tons mv Discovery on our voyage to Murmansk, unlike those poor seamen who sailed in what were the most horrendous wartime convoys of all. On this voyage, we will also celebrate the golden age of shipping in general, with informative guest speakers, rare archive film, special dinners and up to 650 like-minded fellow passengers. But this special 10th Maritime Memories voyage will give us a unique opportunity to pay our respects to the thousands of heroic seafarers who lost their lives serving on those convoys that were under constant attack as they sailed north to the Arctic Circle and Russia.

Maritime Memories Voyage 9 Crowd

So many of you have told us that you would prefer to be part of a Maritime Memories Voyage that sailed to and from a UK port, thus avoiding the need to travel by air. Many more of you have asked if we could arrange a special Maritime Memories Voyage as a tribute to all those that lost their lives on the treacherous WW11 Russian Convoys. Well, we’ve got some great new for you because on the 19th July 2009 we are going to do exactly that, sailing to and from Harwich on a voyage all the way to the Arctic Circle and Murmansk!

On the way we will call at a myriad of really interesting ports and fjords all the way up and down the Norwegian coast, making this voyage not only special for all us ship people, but also a fabulous holiday for everyone.

Onboard we will have all the activities and that have given these unique Maritime Memory Voyages such a great reputation, including special dinners reproduced from menus that were actually used aboard great British liners during the golden age of the British Merchant Navy. There will also be special talks given by maritime experts and special screenings of rare maritime film that has never been made public before. And, when we sail in and out of our ports of call, flying proudly from the ship’s masthead will be an unrivalled display of shipping company house flags representing practically all of the great companies that were once so important to our everyday part lives.

Our ship for this voyage is once again the magnificent MV “Discovery”. At only 20,000 gross tons, in my opinion she’s one of the last real ships still in service. She only carries 600 passengers and as more public room space per passenger than any other ship at sea. She also has wide open, teak lined decks where you can really enjoy being at sea, something you’d find difficult to do aboard one of those floating blocks of flats that try to pass as ships today! She also has a beautiful bridge and wheelhouse with a real helm and quite honestly, this is one of the few opportunities you will ever get to sail aboard a real ship ever again. We’ve used her for nine Maritime Memory Voyages so far and honestly, everyone who has ever sailed with us as had the time of their lives…she’s a very special ship.

During the voyage we will have a special Remembrance Service and when the last post his sounded, a reef of poppies will be cast into the sea at the position where so many seafarers lost their lives.

But you know what will make this voyage so very special, is for all you like-minded people to be together as one. How wonderful to be able to sit out on deck during the long daylight hours of a North Cape summer’s evening, enjoying a drink and just relaxing to the soothing sounds of the passing ocean. That’s what I really enjoy!

Cabins will go very fast for this unique voyage so call us straight away, for whether you went to sea training at Warsash or the Vindi, the Worcester or Gravesend, or served with P&O or General Steam, Cunard or Bank Line, Royal Mail or Coast Lines. Or if you were the Commodore of Union-Castle or just the poor Cabin Boy on the Woolwich Ferry, this is your once in a lifetime opportunity to join this unique voyage.

Oh and by the way, if you are married or have a partner, then don’t worry because “Discovery”, with her wide-open decks, swimming pools, shops, cabaret and cinema has something for everyone and I promise you, they will enjoy every little nautical mile and I promise you; they are always the first to call us on our return to book for another voyage!

I know, I know, I haven’t mentioned prices! Well, more good news because there is a special low rate for all of our Maritime Memories party. You can’t get better than that can you? So call us now on: 01273 585391 or visit our website on info@maritime-memories.com or email us at: des@snowbow.co.uk
